Learn to Ride at Astoria Heights Park

Between 10am and 1pm on Sunday June 22nd, Friends of Astoria Heights Park members Marija and Vedron Lukic and Aliya Smith helped host the first Learn to Ride event ever held in Astoria, NY. This was also our group’s first event specifically taking advantage of The Big Square. A group of 25 children (ages 5–12) showed up and were met by dedicated staff from the Parks Department who led them through balancing exercises on bikes without pedals as a preface to learning to ride bikes all on their own with pedals attached. It was a thrill to watch as the children went through this process in the big square, where each of them had plenty of space to learn. Over the course of three hours, all of the children improved remarkably and most to the point of riding their bikes. Every time a child had some success with their bikes, all of the staff and parents applauded.

Iris Rodriguez from the Recreation division of the Parks Department visited the event and was impressed by the attendance and thrilled with the terrific energy on display. And we were happy to have Council Member Costa Constantinides stop by and cheer on the kids, too.

Friends of Astoria Heights Park looks forward to hosting this event again, perhaps as early as this Fall. Stay tuned!

We had arguably the cutest sign-in table staff in the history of the universe. Arguably.
